What Your One BIPOC Friend Wants You to Know

BIPOC/White Sisterhood

In this episode we talk sisterhood between women of color and white women.

Two weeks ago, we discussed the impact and importance of BIPOC-to-BIPOC sisterhood. Though the voice of this podcast amplifies BIPOC/Mixed Race Unicorns today we are mostly speaking directly to our white co-conspirators about sisterhood. This episode was specifically designed to empower our white sisters and intentionally deepen relationships by having a very clear conversation about race as it pertains to friendship. As stated in this episode, this topic is NOT meant to divide nor shame but to strengthen bonds between white women and BIPOC women so we can become a more fiercely coalesced unit. We heavily reference the article When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color in this episode. This article is a part of our March toolkit. Linked down below. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read it, we strongly encourage you to before listening to the episode. In this episode we will discuss: Tokenism The Toolkit Article -When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color One up, one down complexities Checking privileges How stereotypes impact empathy, behaviors, and perceptions Practical and helpful steps from the article to aid in addressing issue of race in your friendship How these steps apply to deepen Sisterhood Honorary whiteness and whitewashing of your friends Why having interracial friendships are so vital Diversifying your friend group What your one BIPOC friend wants you to know Toni Morrison’s short story: Recitatif (also part of this month’s Toolkit) The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (bonus read) As always, we end in our Happy Place: hint* we’re catching up on our Z’s and Dani feels “called out”?!
