Mixed Girl, Wash Your Face

Beauty Standards and the Beauty Industry

This week we tackle the beauty industry and standards while touching on the topic of body image. We share our “beauty routines” and our own experiences (or lack of) with make-up. We discuss beauty trends and the narrow idea of beauty we have in the western world. We point out how marketing is pushing the “All-American beauty” standards and the damaging effects it has on WOC.

On the flip side we examine beauty standards within our race and the complexities when you are mixed race. We recognize that even within our own race we have “family pressures” that can hold women to unrealistic beauty standards.

As we transition into our own battles with body image we briefly mention “beauty privilege” and fantasize about life without a colonial view of beauty. We would love to here your own experiences or struggles with the beauty industry. Please feel free to let us know and we can share it with all the other unicorns, you never know how your story can empower someone else.

As we try to end on a serious note we end up discussing Korean beauty secrets, you are NOT going to want to miss this. We also challenge ourselves to “wash our face” every night for 30 days. Want to join in on our challenge? Watch our Instagram for details.

Lastly--our happy place! Will we end a whole episode without mentioning serial killers? Listen and find out!

Mixed Race, Half Enough

When You're Not Enough for Your Culture

In this episode we take on a topic suggestion from listener Tabitha - "when you aren't enough for your culture." For us, this really resonates since we've both experienced being told we "talk white" or "act white." We try to dissect what "white things" (vs "black/brown thing") are and why we see them that way. We also recognize that it's not limited to those of us who are biracial - all people of color who are products of colonialism may struggle with this too. We also geek out a bit about cosplay and horror movies as we can't take anything too seriously. Be sure to drop us a line and let us know about your experiences with this topic (and we might share it on an upcoming episode).

Also, our happy places this week devolve into another fandom mini-discussion because we just can't help it.
