Social Media and IRL

blackfish is the new catfish

This week we address a listener suggested topic addressing the difference between social public personas and the actual living breathing physical person which of course leads us down the rabbit hole of blackfishing.

Also this week, Dani and Dameca get mad at the internet for ridiculous memes trying to use Pride Month to promote unrelated causes.

You Better Represent....Race (in Entertainment)

Media Still So White

In this episode we take a look at representation in the entertainment industry. We also introduce a new segment (Dani and Dameca Get Mad at the Internet).

In this full length episode we answer a listeners question! Thank you to the podcast @CircleofNerds for this topic: “Representation in the culture. IS it getting better? Is Hollywood just throwing us bones?” This topic is an opportunity for us to address the issue of White Hollywood in 2019. We also briefly check in with the #Oscarssowhite movement and answer the question “has any change come from it?”

Before going forward we give a definition of what true representation looks like in tv and film (we stick to on screen examples). This leads us into current examples of Hollywood making some strides with diversity by talking about the Jordan Peele movie, Us. We also encourage our listeners to be more mindful with their consumption of media.

We touch on our first exposure to diversity in tv, the good and the bad. From I Love Lucy to Fresh Prince, we address that these shows were important towards the progression of representation BUT these shows still lack the inclusivity of mixed race people. As women of mixed race backgrounds never seeing ourselves reflected in mainstream media, we can’t help but ask, where do we fit it? This question ties in with our new segment…

Dani and Dameca Get Mad At The Internet (D&DGMATI), in this new segment we will bring up meme’s, online stories, articles, etc that we share with each other through out the week that simply pisses us off. This particular segment ties into our main topic as it deals with the tension between people who are full black verse those who are mixed within the television show Mixed-ish.

Finally, we end with our Happy Place!! This week we sound extra cultured, make sure you listen in to find out how. Also make sure to catch us next week with a new minisode!

Female-Male Friendships

Will You Be My Friend (Part III)

This week on the show we finish our three part series on friendship by exploring the female/male (platonic) relationship. In this extended episode we bring in our (fittingly male) best friends Richard Powdrell and Josh Bien. Be sure to check out part I (episode 1) and part II (episode 9) to hear all our feelings about friendship.

In this episode we ask the guys to share their view on both male/male friendships and male/female friendships. We address those differences between those friendship while exploring the possibility of the impact of gender roles on those relationships. Though this episode focuses on the male/female perspective, we also recognize that those who identify as non-binary this topic can be particularly difficult to navigate.

From our first childhood experiences to the arena known as high school we share the complexity of maturing in how to “pick” your friends and keeping them through adulthood. We also share the problematic outcomes when platonic male/female friendships aren’t seen as the norm but the odd exception. This occurs when the balance between males and females (especially in media) are only viewed with a romantic viewpoint.

We ask our guests how the #Metoo movement has affected how men feel around women in a work environment. We pose the question, “are men afraid to be alone with women?”

Because we can’t (and honestly don’t want to) exclude the subject of race we all answer the question if and how race plays a role in our friendships.

To wrap up our conversation we ALL share our happy places!! From Netflix, to snacks, to stand-up comedians, these happy places are bound to put you in a good mood, or at least a better one.

Let's Talk About Sex-ualization

Mixed and exotic

This week we dive into the challenging topic of sexualization. After a short check-in ( it’s allergy season) we breakdown the definition of sexualization and share our own experience being “Holla'd” at.

We begin tackling this topic by addressing that the sexualization (though we do see it in men as well) greatly impacts ALL women BUT that we see an increase in intensity towards WOC and a further focus towards mixed-race women.

We break-off and give an example of one of the first recorded exploitation of a WOC in the story of Sarah Baartman. We also share some disturbing stats involving women’s portrayal in *media*.

While expressing our frustration with common phrases and “compliments” given to mixed-race women we FINALLY confront our feelings with the word exotic ( spoiler: they’re not good feelings). The popular television show “ The Bachelor ” makes its way into our discussion while talking about the hypersexualiaztion of Hapa women in our culture.

Closing up our discussion we encourage men to use there influence to boldly call out sexualization.

We end in our much needed happy place this week but our happy place wouldn’t be a happy place without tangents!

Environmentalism

Mixed Girls vs the Industrial Meat Complex

In this episode we explore environmentalism and challenge the idea that it's just for white people. Is environmentalism another situation where mixed race people have to "choose sides?" We talk about why it shouldn't be that way and what we see as the best steps to care for our environment.

Plus, this week's happy places reveal one of us as young at heart and one as an lady.
