It's a G-Thing: Gentrification

...and millenials buying houses

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

In this episode we take a look at gentrification.

This might be our most “adulting” episode yet as us elder millennial Unicorns converse the housing market. So synonymous with the “American dream,” home ownership is one of the biggest investments most people will make in their lifetime. With a fluctuating market, crippling student debt, and housing availability, the option to buy homes in low-income areas have become a viable option for first time buyers…que today’s episode- gentrification. Love it, hate it, or don’t understand it, gentrification is not necessarily a new trend. But today we want to further examine the correlation between gentrification and race (because, after all, that’s kind of our thing). In this episode you’ll hear…

• An introduction into the history of Redlining • “Urban renewal”- and its lasting impact • Dani sharing her house buying experience • A definition of gentrification • Examples of gentrification • The many complexities of gentrification • Can BIPOC gentrify? • Classism • Is all gentrification bad??

We would love to hear your experience or take on the phenomenon of gentrification. See our details down below for how to reach us.

We end our episode with a very delightful happy place. hint it involves pain and Potter!

Traveling while Mixed

Jetsetting Unicorns

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

In this episode we take a look at travel with a focus on traveling while brown and a woman.

It’s the last days of summer and most of us are still living that “stay-cation” life, so today we want you to live vicariously through our episode today as we talk about travel.

But first, we want to acknowledge that between the high cost, extra charges, availability and the impact flights have on the environment, we recognize that travel IS a privilege. It is with this mindset that we discuss our experience with traveling while being women of color.

In this episode we talk about: -Our own experiences with travel i.e., why we enjoy travel even with its difficulties. -random selection and being pat down -traveling when your family are different shades -issues with authorities -the impact Covid-19 has had on travel and its parallels to 9/11 -Cross country driving as BIPOC and the dangers that need to be considered when visiting unfamiliar areas -The Green Book -Women traveling on their own

We also branch into representation within the travel industry where we discuss -The stereotypes of traveling -POC working in the travel industry (article mentioned in the episode is linked below)

It’s a special Happy Place today: it’s our dream vacation!! hint - it involves famous chocolate and a choo-choo.
