Black Friday and Mixed Marketing

Why's it gotta be black Friday?

In this episode we take a look at Black Friday and what it means in a COVID world. Also, we touch on the uptick in interracial couples being used in commercials.

As if Thanksgiving didn’t already come with its own problematic history, here comes Black Friday/Cyber Monday to make this weekend particularly special.  That’s why this week the Unicorns are discussing Black Friday and the surge of multiracial people/couples in advertisement. In this episode we chat about: o   The impact of Covid-19 and the participation of Black Friday o   Should we cancel Black Friday? (As if it were possible) o   The exploitation of low income and marginalized people groups during these extreme sales. o   The continued struggle for small/locally owned businesses o   We question the motivation of the usage of biracial couples in mainstream advertisement…why isn’t it sitting right for us? o   Shopping with your morals o   What does real representation look like in advertisement? Continuing last year’s tradition, we celebrate “Ungrateful Tuesday” where we share all the things from this past year that we could do without. As always, we end with a palette cleansing Happy Place, *hint – we got lace and aquatic vibes.

Unicorns at the Polls and in New Places

Moving and voting during COVID

This week on the show, we take a step back and do a bit of an update - looking at travelling/moving and voting in the US election during COVID-19.

What a time to be back in America! And even though we are still mourning Halloween we have catching-up to-do. It’s Election Day and before we jump into it, we check in with:

• Dameca relocating to the Evergreen State • Moving woes and challenges • Flying during COVID-19 • Culture shock

We quicky shift our discussion to the election. We touch on the topic of the “I Voted” sticker, voting selfies and voting anxiety. We also highlight the privilege of the ability to vote and what action we can take long after this election is over. Further topics we touch on are:

• Political signage • Financial cost of this election • The temperament of our home states • Asking if voting is enough • Early voting turnout

I think we all could use an Election Day Happy Place *Hint- it involves survival content and furry creatures? Here at Biracial Unicorns we know this season can feel overwhelming and unsure. So please, lean on and into your community during this time, practice self-care if you can, and remember, no matter the turn-out , we still have work to do, Unicorns.
