Unicorn Library: I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter

“I love the smell of old bookstores—paper, knowledge, and probably mildew.”

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

In this episode we review I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.

----Trigger Warning- The book we are reviewing this week mentions death, self-harm, suicide, sexual encounters, and rape.

Spoiler Alert - In reviewing this book there might be spoilers. You have been warned.

A brief summary: Julia is 15, she wants to be a writer, she prefers dark clothing, and reading by herself at family gathering. Julia is smart and wants more out of life and is not afraid to question authority much to the distress of her immigrant parents. Life has not been easy for Julia but at least she had her older sister, the perfect Mexican daughter (and buffer) Olga…that’s until she dead. Now with Olga gone and Julia left to not only deal with her own grief but her parents as well. She slowly pieces together that perhaps she never really knew her sister…maybe she wasn’t perfect.

We hope you have your library card ready because the Unicorns are doing a book review this week!! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, a young adult novel written by Erika L. Sánchez was suggested to us by a listener (thanks Diana). For more information about the author feel free to watch an interview with Erika L. Sánchez linked down below.

In this episode we share the importance of reading lecture by POC and the effect that has on our “empathy muscles”. After giving a brief summary (trying not to give away too many spoilers) we crack into our initial thoughts, highlights, themes, characterizations, and are challenges.

A few of the theme we discuss are:

  • Greif
  • “Coming of age”
  • Family loyalty
  • Family trauma
  • Mother/Daughter relationship (what makes a “good” Mexican daughter vs. a “bad” Mexican daughter)
  • Mental Health

As we close our first book review, we also examine the relationship between Julia and the white characters in the story. If you’ve read this book please let us know your thoughts, we’d love to hear them!! Our contact information is down below.

We close with our lovely happy places hint it’s spooky AND refreshing.

(Racial) Impostor Syndrome

you are enough.

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

“I’m a fraud.”

“I don’t fit in.”

“I am not enough…”

These are just some of the feelings we have experience as mixed women of color. When it comes to racial identity, feeling “enough” for our perspective halves has been a struggle. Some of these feelings fall into the category of Imposter Syndrome (IP). In this episode we examine this phenomenon and how we as Biracial Unicorns can navigate through it.

In this episode we:

  • Briefly discuss the origins of Imposter Syndrome (or Imposter Phenomenon)
  • Share how we’ve personally experienced this phenomenon
  • Describe how Racial Imposter Syndrome can manifest and the negative impact it has on establishing racial identity.

We also have a couple of resources we mention in the episode. You could take the Clance IP Scale test and see if Imposter Syndrome is something you might be battling: https://paulineroseclance.com/pdf/IPTestandscoring.pdf

Afterwards, explore the different types of Imposters: https://interactioninstitute.org/racial-imposter-syndrome/

In this particular episode we strongly encourage anyone who relates to this phenomenon to find a safe community to express these feelings to. Expressing your “imposter-ness” is one way to dismantle the lie of inadequacy. Remember Unicorns, you are enough!

A couple of previous episodes we mention on today's show: Episode 11: Mixed Race. Half Enough - https://biracialunicorns.pinecast.co/episode/7ec9fa541a074d24/mixed-race-half-enough Episode 45: Mixed Mental Health and Identity w/ Brittney George - https://biracialunicorns.pinecast.co/episode/64215913cfaf445e/mixed-mental-health-identity-with-brittney-george

We end the episode on high note with our Happy Place hint It’s fizzy, floral, and fabulous!

Death to Diet Culture

The Unicorn Diet

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

In this episode we take a look at diet culture

Diets have been around for centuries. They have infiltrated our lives through books, pills, media, and even reality shows. In this episode we take a closer look at diet culture and how it has shaped our perception of beauty and health.

We define diet culture as a system that uses restriction or suppression to obtain a certain physical appearance. These systems also tend to equate happiness, success, and fulfillment in direct relationship with a number on a scale. To be clear, mindful nutrition and self-care of one’s body is heavily encouraged here at Biracial Unicorns…not a particular dress size.

This episode we share our own experiences with body image and our own struggles for body positivity and health. Though the ideal cis female body type might fluctuate in proportions from decade to decade it still leans in favor of a slender European frame. What does this mean for BIPOC women? How does this impact body types that are genetically curvy?

We can’t talk about diet culture without mentioning food! In past episodes we have mentioned the deep connection between culture and food. Is there cultural food shaming when it comes to eating healthy? I mean, don’t we all like seasoned vegetables?

We also touch on the body positivity movement and the usage of the word “fat”. Is the word fat helpful or harmful towards body acceptance? We briefly mention the bias of the fashion industry and its favoritism towards slimmer sizes.

In our wrap up we ask ourselves: how do we put an end to diet culture? We discuss ways to dismantle the colonist standards of beauty and also introduce practical steps towards a healthy relationship with food.

Here’s the link to intuitive eating and the podcast mentioned in the episode:

https://encouragingdietian.com/intuitive-eating-for-the-culture-001/

https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/

You know we always like to end in our “Happy Place”, hint they’re both ironically somehow food related.

Social Media Etiquette

Left On Read!

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here.

In this episode, also recorded before the death of George Floyd, we discuss social media etiquette. How do we behave when social media becomes our main public sphere?

To “call out” or not to “call out” people of social media…that is the question. In this time where our “shared spaces” are our social media feeds defining proper etiquette has proven to be difficult.

While sharing our own struggles with finding a balance on social media we breakdown a potential protocol when dealing with problematic comments made in these shared spaces. When calling out racist comments (for example) we suggest you ask yourself:

Who are they to you? Is this someone I would/will interact with on a regular bases? Is this a family member? What is my current relationship statue with said person?

How do I communicate with that person? What’s the best why to communicate a difficult conversation? A personal message? A phone call?

What’s the hope? What’s the end goal of “calling this person out”? Do you want to educate or do you want to be right?

Do I need to respond right in this moment? Is this something you should step back from for a moment

In the next portion of the episode we address our own judgemental tendies, as we discuss, over sharing. Is there such a thing as over sharing? And how can we excersie grace during this time when we all are experiencing collective trauma.

While expanding on the topic of trauma we discuss grieving online. We start by categorizing grief into two types : public and private. We describe the differences and the difficultly expressing both of those types of grief during social distanting.

As we often do, we express the desire and need for us (as people) to have community. You are not alone Unicorns.

It’s time for our Happy Place hint you’re going to feel festive and loved!!
