It's Quarantine Time! (Covid-19)

Wash Your Hands

In this episode we share our thoughts and feelings about COVID-19. COVID-19 is here and we should probably talk about. 2020 is not messing around! Right now, we’re experiencing a global pandemic and we need to talk. This week we briefly discuss the biology and the world-wide response to this virus. We also talk about the disappointing (but not surprising) amount of xenophobia cases that have been reported.

We courage our Unicorns out there to limit the amount of news they are intaking daily (gotta protect that mental health) and to only go to reliable resources like the World Health Organization, NHS.Uk (for our UK Unicorns), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite.

We’re taking a break from Getting Mad at The Internet and decide to do an extra-long HAPPY PLACE, who doesn’t need extra happy things right now!! It’s some good stuff Unicorns!!!

Be safe Unicorns, take care of yourselves, wash your hands, and reach out…we’re here for you.

Royal Unicorns

“We Out,” -Meghan and Harry

In this episode we highlight the royal unicorn, Meghan Markle.

What do two female podcasters from American have in common with the former Duchess of Sussex -- we are both Biracial Unicorns. This week we chat about Meghan and Harry’s step-down from their royal titles but what we REALLY focus on is Markle’s experience as a mixed-race woman. We see in interviews (we have linked the Elle Magazine interview below) that mixed-race people vary in their life experience, but we all seem to still have a core connection. For example, Markle address issues of ambiguousness, having to “pick a side”, and answering the favorite question, “what are you?”

Throughout the episode we also briefly discuss mixed-race marriage and the complexities of a mixed-race family. This leads us to discuss on the topic of traditions and America’s obsession with the royal family. We also give some tiny props to Harry!

This week we get Mad at The Internet and we’re calling out Barnes Noble?!?! Say it’s not so!

As always, we end with our Happy Place, hint* we talk about “catwalks” and cottages -- we know you’re interested.

White Savior

Not My White Knight

In this episode we take a look at White Saviors in fiction, media, and the volunteering realm.

From award winning movies to your local news, the White Savior Complex isn’t difficult to spot. In this episode we define this narrative and share our experiences. The White Savior Complex (WSC) has been highlighted in the media due to movies like, Hidden Figures, and Green Book. In these movies we see POC being aided or “rescued” by the white character often changing the narrative of the story. Throughout the episode we examine how the WSC has impacted the issue of racism and even the negative affect it has on volunteerism. Please check out the videos we have listed below as we reference them in the episode.

Next we get mad at the internet and we’re talking football?? Actually, we’re talking about the 2020 Super Bowl Half-Time show and GIRL, we get mad.

We cleanse our palette with our Happy Place, Hint* , you should get your streaming services ready!!

What are You? (Revisited)

Still Our Favorite Question

In this episode we revisit our topic from episode 0 and look to the future of Biracial Unicorns.

This week we are “traveling back in time.” As the first month of 2020 comes to an end, we want to look back at our first episode and reflect on our podcast journey. In episode 0, we ask ourselves our “favorite questions” as a mixed person, and the “What Are You” question? During our podcast we both have made new discoveries about ourselves and our identity as mixed women of color. We recognize we both still have some discomfort processing our “favorite” question but the input from the Biracial Unicorn community has been encouraging.

Throughout the episode we draw back on guests we have had and the camaraderie we have felt with other mixed-race people. We also share some of our challenges we’ve had over the past year and also what we are looking forward to in the next season of our show.

This week’s Getting Mad at The Internet hits a little close to home. We get mad at someone near and dear to our hearts. We end our show with our HAPPY PLACE Hint , this week will have you reaching for your favorite YA novel AND see your favorite memes in a new light.
