Forgiveness, the Other F-Word

Sequel to Episode 26 How Not to Apologize

In this episode we dive deep into the topic of forgiveness.

This week we REALLY challenge ourselves and open up about forgiveness. As a continuation to our episode, “How Not to Apologize” we share our own personal battles with forgiveness in this episode.

In true Unicorn fashion we begin by defining forgiveness not by what it IS but by what it is NOT. We discuss how forgiveness is not reconciliation or an excusal of consequences are just a couple of reasons why some may struggle with forgiveness.

We shift into some of the effects unforgiveness has on our mental and physical health. In this portion we briefly share how unforgiveness mimics the effects that HIGH stress has on the body. This topic transitions into WHY we should forgive and what is the purpose of forgiveness.

We here at Biracial Unicorns acknowledge the difficulty of forgiveness, whether it’s interpersonal forgiveness, generational, historical, racial, etc--we know it’s a struggle. We hope you find this particular episode helpful and we also encourage seeking the help of your community if you’re hostile towards forgiveness.

Next, we get “Mad at the Internet”, and it doesn’t get more technical than this week’s topic! Our Happy Places this week Hint it may be too cute (and out of character) for these two Unicorns!!

The film is based on the Broadway play of the same name and the playwright Christopher Demos-Brown, also wrote the film. Thanks to Sara of NutritionInColor for the suggestion!

This movie has NUMEROUS relevant themes and topics that ultimately boils down to race. We also share our thoughts ranging from why they adapted this play to film, who should see this movie, and would we recommend it.

The Dark Side of Christmas

Seasonal Depression

In this episode we discuss why Christmas isn't all joy and cookies.

With a week till Christmas we wanted to take a moment and address why this might NOT be “the most wonderful time of the year”.

Weather you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, a vitamin D deficiency, or the flu, this time of year with less sunshine and long cold nights physically takes a toll on your body. We are also aware that those of us who suffer year-round with depression can easily isolate themselves during this time of year.

We next spend some time talking about consumer culture. We share ideas on how to consume less and appreciate more (while realizing we have a lot to learn on the matter).

Our next points deal with people who are coping with loss/disconnection with family and those who are still healing from trauma. The holiday season seems to focus itself around being together with family, but we recognize that in itself can be changeling.

Lastly, and not to be overlooked, we want to create space for those Unicorns who just DON’T celebrate Christmas. We want to encourage those listening to not exclude but to be mindful of those who do not celebrate Christmas. Anytime you can make an excuse to have people over, make special plans, or even write a special message to a friend…you should take it, no holiday required.

As we “Get Mad at The Internet”, we couldn’t pass up talking about a VERY divisive issue…. Christmas music!! Where do you stand?

Wrapping up our festive show we share our happy place. This week we have similar happy places and the birth of a “new podcast”??? hint bring your spoons!! Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday you filthy Unicorns!!

Multiracial Adoptions / Transracial Unicorns

Adopting Outside Your Race

In this episode we talk about adoption, specifically interracial/transracial adoption and what parallels we see for people of mixed race.

Today we really go out of our comfort zone as we discuss transracial adoption. In this episode we focus mainly on domestic adoption and it’s impact on racial identity.

Our initial interest stemmed from the parallels we saw between those adoptive by parents outside of their race and people who are mixed. We were also inspired by Angela Tucker (a WOC adopted by white parents) and her documentary (and web series). In these we saw an overlap of the feeling of tokenism, code switching, and struggles with identity.

We transition into asking the question; is adopting outside your own race promote “racial genocide”? We briefly talk about the history of adoption in America and how that affects some the views of adopting outside of your own race.

As we wrap up we ask the question, is transracial adoption on “The White List”? Why does it seem that POC who adopt do not get the same exposure?

In our next segment of Getting Mad at The Internet we discuss Fitbit. Has Fitbit been lying to us???

As always we end in our Happy Place, this week involves climbing mountains and fashion statements?? Listen and find out.

We would love to hear about YOUR experience with transracial adoption!! Our contact information is down below. We, the Unicorns know we are far from being experts on this topic but by opening up this conversation we hope to open up a dialogue, gain understanding, and give exposure to those who are part of the transracial adoption community.

Uncomfortable Thanksgiving Conversations

Bridging Conversations at the Family Dinner Table

In this episode we share some of our tips for having those difficult, uncomfortable conversations at Thanksgiving dinner.

Just in time for Thanksgiving this week we diplomatically discuss having difficult conversations with your family. We recognize that though some may find family gatherings uplifting and relaxing others do not share that experience. I’m sure many of us can recall our first real lesson on dinner etiquette( besides no elbows on the table), “ Do not discuss, politics or religion at the dinner table.” This week we encourage our listeners to rebel against small and superficial conversations, in hopes to deepen our relationships with our family members.

We first discuss why, why even have these uncomfortable conversations, does the “reward” match the effort? While answering this question we touch on the issue of echo chambers and the dangers of remaining silent on issues ie; sexism, xenophobic, bigotry.

Switching gears from why into HOW we have these uncomfortable conversations brings up two possible types of heavy conversations, healing or bridging. This particular episode we are focusing more on bridging conversations.

We move onto a suggestive guideline that we hope you find helpful in navigating these uncomfortable conversations. A few points of the guideline are, assuming good intentions , staying calm, choosing your battles ahead of time, and having your support system for afterwards!!

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without Dani and Dameca getting mad! This week’s Mad At Internet segment is VERY on theme. Hint Happy Ungrateful Tuesday!!

As always we end with our Happy Place, this week consist of trendy alien comics and audio books?? Make sure to listen for details.
