Year of the Unicorn (Listener question episode recorded on Instagram Live)

One Year In

For our one year anniversary, we took a listener question episode to Instagram Live.

It’s been ONE YEAR for the Biracial Unicorns Podcast and we celebrated with an Instagram Live question and answer!! We have gathered some amazing listener questions over the past couple of months and answered them over the span of two Instagram Live episodes. Here are some of the questions we answered:

  1. Being biracial, have you ever been mistaken for another race you’re not apart of?

  2. Do you have any tips on raising children who don't present as black in a way that keeps them connected with their black heritage?

  3. What is your opinion on these hate groups protesting on the streets in America?  Should it be allowed because of our freedoms to peacefully protest and free speech? Or should it be banned, therefore opening doors for the government to step in and stop all kinds of freedoms.

  4. As a young mixed girl growing up did you struggle with your hair type and what mixed girls' hair is "supposed" to look and feel like compared to your own?

  5. My daughter was at the park a few days ago playing with some little black girls and loved their hair (braided with beads). She was asking when she can have hair like that. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Her hair is too short right now anyway so it’s not an issue yet, but I want to teach her well from the beginning and am apparently terrible at figuring out how to do that with a barely 3 year old. Any advice for navigating that conversation?

  6. How do I raise biracial children to be proud of their heritage, and not just feel like they may not belong because they aren’t “enough” of something?

  7. What do you think about non Latinx people celebrating [dia de los muertos]?

Of course we can’t do an episode without ending with our happy place! We won’t give it away but it’s very cultured this week, pinkies out. We want to thank EVERYONE who wrote in and joined us on our live episode. We also want to to thank all the beautiful Unicorns who have joined us on our journey! We are excited for this next season and as always we wanna hear from YOU. Please feel free to contact us with questions, show ideas, and your own experiences/stories/.

Bonus listen ALL the way to the end of the eposide for the premier of our theme song with lyrics by it’s creator Josef Scott!!

How Not to Apologize

Saying You're Sorry Publicly and Privately

In this episode we take a look at how to not apologize (there's so many great examples out there).

Inspired by the lengthy list of public apologies given lately, this week we discuss how NOT to apologize. We began by sharing our reactions to a recent public apology given by a local news anchor (a white female) towards her follow co-host (a black male) to whom she compared to an ape during the filming of the show.

After sharing our thoughts on public apologies, we get down to the root of why we as people are so BAD at apologizing. We take this topic all the way back to childhood (aren’t all problems) where we learn that saying “sorry” is simply a means to an end. As a child we aren’t taught the impact of our negative actions or how to right the situation. So what is the answer? We the Biracial Unicorns might not have the answers but we do have some suggestions. Over the remaining time of our discussion we go over some points/ tips that you might find helpful (next time you have to apologize). Make sure to listen to this episode to find out.

Once we reviewed our “Don’t List”, we get Get Mad At The Internet! This week involves Alaska, a swim meet, and swim wedgie?? Oh don’t worry, there’s plenty to be mad about indeed.

We end our episode as always with a much need exhale with our Happy Place!!! Hint it’s carbs and podcast related!!

Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day

Everything we were taught about Columbus was a lie.

In this episode we talk about why Columbus Day makes us feel icky and why we should all celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day instead.

Today on the show we give a shout out to a famous colonizer, liar, thief, terrible geographer and genocider, who is so famous that he has his own b-list holiday…Christopher Columbus.

As we dive into the shady history of Columbus Day, we start with some background history, spoiler New Mexico has a special connection to this.

We start by briefly sharing our concerns with how schools approach teaching history, especially on this topic of Columbus. These concerns lead us into a short game of “Fact or Fiction”, where we question some of the historical “facts” about Christopher Columbus. If that wasn’t enough reason to object to Columbus wait until we read a section of his own diary!

We then discuss issues of racial trauma and the negative impact this has had on Indigenous people, which leads into the topic on how we can start to “De-Columbus” our Columbus Day. In this section we urge people to not only learn, but to acknowledge the not-so-pretty history of this country. We then highlight what some states in the U.S. are doing to decolonize this holiday. Some states are choosing to recognize it as a day of mourning, while some are reclaiming it as a time to pay tribute to Indigenous people; our vote is for Indigenous People Day!

We can’t forget to get mad at the internet today…we’re “playing” with dolls.

Since we’ve been sort of mad most of the episode we need our HAPPY PLACE more than ever. This one is fun and fashionable!!----

Exploring Identity Through Art

Interview with Helen Atkins

This week we chat with artist, arts organizer, and lovely biracial unicorn Helen Atkins. You can find more information about her on her website or on instagram @helenjuliet_art and @platesagainstpatriarchy.

In this episode we discuss matters of art and race. Our talented guest Helen Atkins opens up about how her mixed heritage impacts her artwork.

We asked questions ranging from, _what are you?, is art on the “white list”?, to what artists of color should we be looking out for? _

We also spend sometime hearing about the collaborative art project of Plates Against Patriarchy, an artistic and visual response to the 2016 election. Here Atkins shares her feelings of being a women of mixed race (and daughter to an immigrant) and how those feelings manifested into this unique project. We here at Biracial Unicorns encourage (those who are able) to check out their exhibit (see above for details). Thank you so much to Helen Atkins for her time and sharing her experiences with us, we had a blast!

We end with sharing our Happy Place(s) with Helen!

More information about Helen's artistic influences: Genevieve Gaignard and Andres Serrano can be found at their respective websites.

Mixed and Faith

Religion and Race

In this episode we look at the connections between race/culture and religion/faith.

We are back again with a full episode! This episode is dedicated to sharing our experience and view on religion and how it correlates with race.

After our check- in (what are we binge watching??), we dive right in and explore Dani’s background with Catholicism. Dani, who rides the line of Atheism and Agnostic, grew up with a very strong Catholic background. Dani also shares that she would not call herself spiritual but has a fervent cultural connection to Catholicism. We then expand of the idea of being culturally Catholic and the ties to tradition and family for the Mexican and Latinx community (and why so many are leaving the faith).

In 2019 it is still said that America is a “ Christian nation” though we are finding more often that people are creating there own religion and spiritual experience.

We then move on to Dameca as she shares a bit about her religious background and her coming into her own faith as a Christian. Dameca expresses her own struggles with being a WOC accused of taking part in a “white mans religion”. This leads us into talking about the increase of African-Americans leaving Christianity and turning to African based religions. Perhaps this has something to do with “white Jesus”.

We wrap up this talk with suggestions on how and how not to address the topic of religion when discussing it with others…we hope the take away is helpful.

D&D Get Mad At The Internet: Ooooo, a teacher shares their political view in the classroom and we are mad!

Happy Place!! Dani and Dameca unwind and share what brought them joy this week.

Join us next Tuesday for our minisode where anything can happen as we have a conversational blind date. ---
