Unicorn and Chill: A review of Selena, The Series

An honest review of the 2021/2022 Netflix series

In this episode we have an honest conversation about Selena, The Series.

Today on the podcast we take it back to the 90’s where hair was big, pagers were cool, and Selena (Selena Quintanilla-Pérez) was taking the world by storm. This episode we finally get to discuss Selena, The Series which is streaming now on Netflix. After waiting over a year to watch both parts we share our thoughts and complicated feelings and opinions about this most recent take on the Tejano and Pop music icon. In this episode you’ll hear:

  • Our general thoughts on the series and how does it compare to the 1997 Selena movie
  • Some of our concerns (and perhaps disappointments) with the series
  • We’ll discus colorism within the Latine community, particularly in film
  • How much should an actor resemble the person they are portraying
  • Machismo culture and its role it played in Selena the series
  • The importance of good story telling
  • We also share our admiration and respect for the Selena

We’d love to know your thoughts, did you enjoy Selena the series? What’s your favorite Selena song? Did you prefer the movie or the series? Let us know, all of our information is down below.

We wrap up our lovely episode in our Happy Place, hint* “We don’t talk about catching children’s movie theme songs” and challenges for those who do not like challenges.

Unicorn Library: Sharks in the Time of Saviors

the book by Kawai Strong Washburn

In this episode we take down one final book for the year from the Unicorn Library's shelves and spend some time discussing Kawai Strong Washburn's debut novel, Sharks in the Time of Saviors. This story follows the Flores family, struggling with the impacts of capitalism and colonialism and signs from the supernatural in 1990s/2000s Hawai'i.

We discuss what we've learned from this book; how we relate to the story, themes, and characters; and why we think it's a great read for all unicorns, even if you don't have a connection to Hawai'i.

Still on the fence about reading it? Here's a taste of the beautiful language:

  • "I could see him there, the waves and tides and gods dragging him around. But I'm in the water, too, I wanted to say. No one's watching to see if I stay afloat."
  • "How long was I stupid enough to believe we were indestructible? But that's the problem with the present, it's never the thing you're holding, only the thing you're watching, later, from a distance so great the memory might as well be a spill of stars outside a windshield at twilight"

We also wrap up the year with our happy places, while Rocking Around the Christmas Tree was not either of our picks, it could be a bridge between the two. We also give a brief taste of what we're looking forward to in the new year after the plugs.

Happy new year and we wish you a safe and happy 2022.

Reminder: drop us a line or voicemail with your thoughts on HOME - what does home mean to you? how can we find it as biracial unicorns?
