Can You Appropriate Your Own Culture?

Passing, Exploring Your Identity, and Other Concerns Thanks to Colonialism

In this episode we discuss our thoughts on the question "can you appropriate your own culture?"

Can you appropriate your own culture? We start this month’s new Toolkit with a seriously loaded question. Join us this June as we go “back to basics” as we discuss the mixed identity through the lens of appearance.  Over the next few weeks we’ll dive into how our appearance affects not only how we are treated but how we racially and culturally identity ourselves and the struggles that may entail. In this episode you’ll hear us converse about:

  • June’s Toolkit
  • What do we mean by appropriating your own culture?
  • How closely this is related to imposter syndrome (Ep.46 on Imposter Syndrome linked down below)
  • What is colonialism's role in this question?
  • The exhaustion of being mixed race and “straddling two or more cultures”.
  • How much your physical appearance impacts your racial identity.
  • What does this mean for people who are NOT mixed with white?
  • What about BIPOC who have grown up away from your homeland and/or culture?
  • Dani shares a story of ethnic fraud (article linked down below).
  • The fear of being accused of appropriating as a mixed BIPOC.
  • We discuss the article: When Half is Whole: Learning from the Stories of Multiethnic Asian American Identities by Stephen Murphy-Sigematsu (article linked down below)

We end in our favorite segment of the show, our Happy Place! Hint prepare for fashion al fresco!

Biracial Unicorns Toolkit: Identity and Appearance

This month's toolkit we're focusing on identity and appearance. Join us this month (June 2021) or anytime by working through the following resources:

Watch: Little White Lies - a documentary by Lacey Schwartz (available with Amazon Prime or various online platforms for rent)

What is Cancel Culture Anyway?

Consequence Culture > Cancel Culture

In this episode we take a look at Cancel Culture.

May’s toolkit is putting these Unicorns to work! Cancel Culture, a challenging, divisive, and ever-increasing relevant topic in today’s world. If you occupy any presences on social media or watch the news this hot button topic has taken its share of space. So, we are breaking down this topic starting from its origin and purpose, to questioning its very existence. As we research and simultaneously sort where we stand with cancel culture ourselves, we invite you to join the process. On the podcast you’ll hear us discuss: ·      The historical trace of the literal term of Cancelled, and Cancel Culture ·      Is there a true definition of cancel culture? ·      An exploration of different types and/or levels of cancellation ·      The comparisons between cancellation, boycotting, and protest ·      The conservative and political use/misuse of cancellation ·      Is cancel culture even real? Is it impactful? ·      The correlation between performative activism and its relationship to cancel culture as we discuss the article The Sleep Walking White Ally by Jasmine M. Pulido ·      The importance of self-examination when it comes moral, political, public and personal stance Make sure to join us next week where we continue this topic by examining cases of cancellation and workshopping through the process of self-examination, boundaries, and actions of accountability. _ _We make a pit stop at one of our favorite segments -Dani and Dameca Get Mad At The World, where we ask the importance questions we’re all dying to ask…why is Elon Musk hosting SNL? We wine down our show in our Happy Place, *HINT- It was a dark and stormy night in a melanated future.

Working in PWIs

Surviving Professional Predominantly White Institutions

Finishing off the April Toolkit we continue discussing PWIs but this week we’re talking about Professional (workplace) PWIs. We begin by chatting about the overlapping similarities between Academic and professional predominantly white institutions. Throughout the podcast we combat the white supremacy structure that American capitalism was built upon and the lasting effect on BIPOC in the workplace. Articles mentioned in this week’s episode:

In this episode we will dive into:

  • The emotional impact of Affirmative Action on BIPOC in the workplace.
  • The correlation of white supremacy and toxic work environments.
  • The relationship between white supremacy and capitalism.
  • How the hiring of (a few) BIPOC does NOT change the root issue of racism in the workplace.
  • Diversity training should not always fall upon the shoulders of your BIPOC coworkers.
  • We walk through the article from this month’s toolkit, The Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture from Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups, by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun
  • The challenges of calling out racism, microaggressions, and racial biases in the workplace verse the Academic sitting.
  • What about being mixed race in a PWI?
  • What are some ways to thrive in PWIs for BIOPC and Unicorns?
  • How can our co-conspirators put activism in action in the workplace?

We delightfully end in our Happy Place this week, hint*- You find out how we really feel about peanuts and what to do with Unsolved Mysteries withdrawal.
