I Will Survive...PWIs

Surviving Predominantly White (Educational) Institutions

In this episode we take a look at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) in the education world.

New month, new Toolkit! This month we’re sharing our experiences with predominately white institutions (PWIs). This month we are going to be breaking PWIs into two parts: the beginning of the month we will be discussing Academic PWIs and the second half of the month we’ll dive into professional PWIs. Our goal with this topic will be for Unicorns to have a place of refuge, feel seen and hopefully acquire some techniques in order to thrive in these spaces. We also desire our co-conspirator’s to not only be aware of these predominately white spaces but how to take action towards meaningful and sustainable inclusivity. In this episode you will hear:

  • What is a PWI?
  • Why are we talking about them?
  • Being part of the majority is a privilege.
  • PWIs impact on an Academic environment which includes
  • Curriculum
  • Staffing
  • Mentorship
  • Discussion on one of April Toolkit’s articles: Your Predominantly White Organization (Yes, Even Yours) is Exactly One Live- Tweeted Racist Event Away from Public Disgrace.
  • The emotional impact on students of color in Academic PWIs.
  • Are HBCUs (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) the solution to PWIs?
  • How can POC cope in these PWIs?
  • A brief discussion on the “Watch” portion of April’s Toolkit: Blurred Lines: A Documentary on the Declining Differences Between Historically Black Colleges & Universities in Today’s Society

This week we decided to skip Getting Mad at The World and go straight to our Happy Place!! Hint - kitchen top appliances and Asian market surprises really are the simple pleasures in life. Make sure you check-out our Instagram page for the complete list of all of April’s Toolkit items, and as always, we’d appreciate your feedback! It was NOT a "bad day" - it was sexism, fetishism, racism, xenophobia

We stand with our AAPI siblings. Please visit this list of Stop Asian Hate Resources to find out more about how you can help: https://linktr.ee/stopasianhateresources

In this bonusode, we debrief about last week's tragedy and share some frames for processing hate crimes.

We needed some time and space to process and as you'll hear, we're still struggling but we felt it is important for us to use whatever platform we have to drive dialogue and action around this. Coincidentally, today, March 24th, the day we recorded has been lifted as a Day of Solidarity for #stopasianhate (see more info below from the instagram @stopasianhate)

Many of us have been inspired by the protests against the ongoing wave of attacks targeting the Asian community but have been unable to attend in-person - this event allows us to show our support for the community from anywhere in the world and stand united against racism.

In the United States, over 3700 self-reported incidents of anti-Asian discrimination have been recorded since February 2020, over 10 a day. The US has also seen a 150% increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans despite overall hate crimes going down 7% with a disproportionate number targeting women.

The increased targeting has not been limited to the United States. In Vancouver, Canada, hate crimes against Asian-Canadians increased by 717%. 8 in 10 Asian-Australians have experienced instances of racism since 2020.

On March 16, 2021, 6 women of Asian descent were gunned down in #Atlanta, Georgia. #EnoughIsEnough. It's time to stand up and speak out.

What Your One BIPOC Friend Wants You to Know

BIPOC/White Sisterhood

In this episode we talk sisterhood between women of color and white women.

Two weeks ago, we discussed the impact and importance of BIPOC-to-BIPOC sisterhood. Though the voice of this podcast amplifies BIPOC/Mixed Race Unicorns today we are mostly speaking directly to our white co-conspirators about sisterhood. This episode was specifically designed to empower our white sisters and intentionally deepen relationships by having a very clear conversation about race as it pertains to friendship. As stated in this episode, this topic is NOT meant to divide nor shame but to strengthen bonds between white women and BIPOC women so we can become a more fiercely coalesced unit. We heavily reference the article When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color in this episode. This article is a part of our March toolkit. Linked down below. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read it, we strongly encourage you to before listening to the episode. In this episode we will discuss: Tokenism The Toolkit Article -When White Women Cry: How White Women’s Tears Oppress Women of Color One up, one down complexities Checking privileges How stereotypes impact empathy, behaviors, and perceptions Practical and helpful steps from the article to aid in addressing issue of race in your friendship How these steps apply to deepen Sisterhood Honorary whiteness and whitewashing of your friends Why having interracial friendships are so vital Diversifying your friend group What your one BIPOC friend wants you to know Toni Morrison’s short story: Recitatif (also part of this month’s Toolkit) The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (bonus read) As always, we end in our Happy Place: hint* we’re catching up on our Z’s and Dani feels “called out”?!

BIPOC Sisterhood

minus the traveling pants

In this episode we talk sisterhood.

“I got all my sisters with me.”- Sister Sledge

It’s Women’s History Month, so for the month’s first of two episode on Sisterhood we’re cracking into BIPOC Sisterhood. This episode heavily references the Michella Obama podcast – Episode 5: The Gift of Girlfriends with Denielle, Sharon, and Kelly. This podcast is an action point of our March Toolkit. Make sure to reference our Instagram for a written copy or check out our bonus episode for the March Toolkit. In this episode we discuss:

  • How Sisterhood is portrayed in the entertainment industry
  • How we define Sisterhood
  • How we relate to our blood sisters
  • The kinship between Mixed-Race Unicorns
  • The important of BIPOC to BIPOC female friendship
  • The Michelle Obama podcast and how much we relate to it
  • The ability to be open and vulnerable when establishing friendships
  • Actively seeking out friendships with BIPOC women
  • “Making the time” for friendships
  • What it looks like to be intentional in seeking and cultivating a Sisterhood

This episode was leaving us feeling quite positive so of course we have to pause that with Dani and Dameca Get Mad at The World. This week’s topic: Why! Are! They! Still! #goldenglobessowhite!!!  We spend a brief time talking why we wish we could write off award shows but how they are still a necessary part of industry. Ending, as always, in our Happy Place this week is so applicable! hint get out your notepads and straws because these Happy Places double as self-care.

Minisode: Family Matters

We somehow managed to not say "did I do that" for the whole episode

In this episode we talk about the '90s classic sitcom, Family Matters, and king of the blerds - Steve Urkel. Though Dani does total get Jaleel White's name wrong (sorry Jaleel).

Biracial Unicorns Toolkit: Sisterhood

A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves — a special kind of double.

It's March and we're back with another toolkit - this month we are focused on "sisterhood."

Listen: The Michelle Obama Podcast, episode 5: The Gift of Girlfriends with Denielle, Sharon, and Kelly (wherever you get your podcasts)
