In this episode we take a look at the latest Olympic games.

The Unicorns are taking a tiny break but they'll be back at the end of the summer!

In this episode we take a look at how to not apologize (there's so many great examples out there).

Inspired by the lengthy list of public apologies given lately, this week we discuss how NOT to apologize. We began by sharing our reactions to a recent public apology given by a local news anchor (a white female) towards her follow co-host (a black male) to whom she compared to an ape during the filming of the show.

After sharing our thoughts on public apologies, we get down to the root of why we as people are so BAD at apologizing. We take this topic all the way back to childhood (aren’t all problems) where we learn that saying “sorry” is simply a means to an end. As a child we aren’t taught the impact of our negative actions or how to right the situation. So what is the answer? We the Biracial Unicorns might not have the answers but we do have some suggestions. Over the remaining time of our discussion we go over some points/ tips that you might find helpful (next time you have to apologize). Make sure to listen to this episode to find out.

Once we reviewed our “Don’t List”, we get Get Mad At The Internet! This week involves Alaska, a swim meet, and a swim wedgie?? Oh don’t worry, there’s plenty to be mad about indeed.

In this episode we explore the topic of intergenerational trauma with a specific look at racial trauma.

Trauma is real and it’s in your DNA?! Yes. This week we define and break down this theory of intergenerational trauma that has been gaining exposure. We focus on specific racial intergenerational trauma as we explain what it is, how is manifests, and the lasting affects it has not only on POC but white people as well. We also break into the genetic impact that trauma has on our DNA...prepare to be shook.

Our focus for this week’s show was not only about highlighting and informing people about this type of trauma but to share resources and tools to aid in the HEALING of intergenerational trauma. So, how to heal? Get some books!! There are some great reading materials that could help in a powerful way to find a starting place. Our resources (mentioned below) discuss the importance of harmony within your own family. This might involve family therapy, addressing past grievances, and forgiveness. We also share our desire--as POC--for our communities to unify. But what does that look like for mixed-race people?

Since we’re taking a break from Getting Mad at The Internet, we roll right into our Happy Place!! This week we enjoy basic delights!! Hint it’s all about the bergamot and loyalty?

It’s a double feature here at Biracial Unicorns! Not only are we reviewing Lacey Schwartz’s documentary, Little White Lies, we also have company!  Jesi Smith of So Smith Photography joins us on the show to discuss adoption, identity, and her experience growing up Jewish.  

Little White Lies, written, directed, and produced by Lacey Schwartz, tells her story as a mixed-race black WOC…that didn’t know she was mixed. Lacey lived most of your young life believing she was a white jewish girl from Woodstock, New York until, she entered high-school where here darker complication and curly hair raised questions amongst her black school mates. Schwartz’s documentary tells the story of family secrets, identity, and self-discovery. We hope you watch it and discuss it with your favorite Unicorns. In this episode we discuss:

The similarities between Lacey’s experience and Jesi’s experience We ask the question, “What are you?” We ask what identity looks like for someone in an interracial adoption How others perception of us impacts how we identify ourselves What is passing? In this episode we discuss Danzy Senna's first novel, Caucasia.

We are in the Unicorn Library with Caucasia by Danzy Senna. This book is part of our June toolkit, please make sure to check out the rest of June’s toolkit resources. This stores is told from the perception of Birdie, a white passing mixed-race girl from Boston in the mid-1970’s. Birdie and her darker complected older sister Cole are so close they even have their own language. As racial tensions swell in the sister’s home time and their parents spilt, the two sisters are separated. Cole goes off with their father (who is black) and Birdie goes with their mother (who is white). The story follows Birdie as she is forced to pass as white while she and her mother are on the run. This heartbreaking and provoking story allows us to ask the hard question about race, identity, and perception. In this episode you’ll hear us discuss:

• Who is Danzy Senna?
• Seeking parent approval.
• The dynamics of interracial marriage. 
• Raising mixed race children.
• A dive into the identities of the main characters. 
• Can you love someone when you don’t love yourself?
