Unicorns at the Movies: One Night in Miami

film and Black History Month

This week’s episode is a Unicorns at the Movies! We are reviewing the Kemp Powers movie, One Night in Miami, directed by Regina King. This particular movie is one of the action points of this month’s Toolkit (There’s still time to read up and participate in this month’s toolkit. All the information is located on our Instagram page @biracialunicorns).

We both enjoyed watching this fictional interpretation of true events that happened on the night of February 25th when a young and newest heavy weight champion of the world, Cassius Clay, the sports icon Jim Brown, the singing sensation Sam Cook, and civil rights activist Malcolm X spend a night together at the Hampton Hotel in Miami. This movie was beautifully directed and perfectly cast with the talents of Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Gorgee, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. In this episode expect to hear:

  • A brief summary of the movie
  • Our overall reaction of the movie
  • A bit more background information on writer Kemp Powers and director Regina King
  • Our thoughts on the relationships on conflicts between the main characters (especially the characters of Malcolm X and Sam Cook).
  • Our views on the portrayal of Malcolm X in this movie and how it differs from past depictions
  • Why we thought this movie was significant to watch during Black History Month.

We would love to hear your thoughts on One Night in Miami, so please feel free to reach out with your review OR if you have a movie in mind you’d like us to watch and review on the show, let us know (our information is down below).

In this episode, we also reference a previous Unicorns at the Movies episode about the film American Son. You can check it out at https://bit.ly/3ungZQb.

Alongside Unicorns at The Movies, we also have Dani and Dameca Get Mad at the World! And this week ties too perfectly with our Black History month theme. A Montessori school in Utah became news worth when the parents of the school requested their children opt out of the Black History Month curriculum this year…oh you’ll just have to listen to know how we REALLY felt about that.

We NEEDED something to end the show on a higher note after that last segment, and this week’s HAPPY PLACE will hopefully put you in a better mood. Hint* - Sometimes you need to spit hot fire and sometimes you got to cool off the internet.

Black History Has Its Eye on You

Is Black History History?

In this episode we talk Black History Month.

It’s February, the shortest and also one of the coldest months of year which can only mean one thing, Black History month is upon us once more.  In the past we have not been timid about our feelings and views on Black History month, so, this episode we are detailing our thoughts, reservations, and hopes for Black history.  This will also be our first episode where we implement our first Toolkit topic. Make sure you listen to the bonus episode to be up to speed or check out our Instagram. In this episode we discuss: The problem with compartmentalizing Black History to a singular month The impact of separating Black History from American (and world) history The separation between other “non-white” history and Black history Black History vs Black Future Being mixed during Black History Month – Dameca shares her thoughts and experience Reflections on “The Gates of Freedom Here?” by Angela Davis Does true integration of “non-white” history mean the erasure of “white history”? This week on Dani and Dameca Get Mad At The World, we stay on topic and share some of the cringy ways teachers choose to celebrate Black History month. Ending our episode is our Happy Place, * hint – they are both hot, steamy, and involve the return of one of the show’s favorite topics.

We Doth Protest

Attempted Coups, Protests, and You

In this episode we talk about the events at the US Capitol on January 6th, what we consider a protest, and where we belong in protest movements.

In this episode you’ll hear the Unicorns discuss: ·      The January 6th Storming of The Capital o   What will we call this "event" in the future? ·      What’s the difference between a protest and a riot/mob? ·      How does critical thinking and mindfulness play a part in protesting? ·      Do you have to protest to be a part of “the cause”? Also, we reintroduce an old segment called, “Dani and Dameca Get Mad at The Internet” …but really, we’re mad at the world. This week we focus our anger on the emphasis of the outfits worn by the women during the 2021 Inauguration. Sexism and fashion? What a pair! As always, we end in our Happy Place hint- You should just really go to Japan.

2020 Wrap Up

or, A Dumpster Fire's Tale

In this episode we take a look back on some of the biggest news stories of 2020.

The Unicorns are doing that thing that people do when a year comes to an end and they relive the whole year over again…but with way more saltiness. Let’s be honest, this year has been a dumpster fire but for all the trauma it has caused us, there have been some slivers of sunshine. This episode we will be discussing the highs, the lows, the strange, and the remarkable events that made 2020 a watershed year.  This episode we’ll be reminiscing about (not in same order as the show): ·      Covid (freakin’) 19 o   Toilet paper shortages o   Life pretty much cancelled o   An American wake-up call ·      The resurgence of Black Lives Matter ·      Mother nature was MAD o   Locust in Africa o   Murder hornets o   Fires in Australia, California, Washington… o   Celibate snakes laying eggs o   Fire tornados o   Reverse waterfalls o   Gay and lesbian penguins battle over eggs ·      Celebrities deaths ·      Space (somehow) got a little more mysterious o   A star disappeared o   The government released information about UFO’s o   The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction ·      The political history o   Trump’s Impeachment o   The 2020 elections o o   First women and first WOC Vice President Elect o   AOC playing among “the people” on Twitch o   The passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg o   Is Kim Jong- Un alive? o   Brexit, finally o   The Royal Family split -Meghan and Harry leave the royal family ·      Honorable mentions o   Biracial Unicorns hit 100 total episodes o   W.A.P. (if you know, you know) o   Macaulay Culkin turns 40…40!! The Unicorns packed a great deal into this episode, but we can’t leave without a finally 2020 Happy Place hint Tejano music and zoo animals on Instagram?? Now that’s how you end a year!! We appreciate all the support, suggestions, and encouragement we have received this year.  We look forward to creating new content and cultivating more space for BIPOC/ Mixed race Unicorns to be themselves.
