Shadowbans & Silos on Social Media

social media to center and silo people from the margins

In this episode we take a look at shadowbanning and other challenges POC, WOC, and other people outside the "mainstream" face when connecting on social media.

Influencers, creators, and algorithms! We revisit the topic of social media this week, but this time we are discussing the mysterious beast that is shadow-banning. Difficult to define and harder to prove, content creators of size, of color, women, queer, and disabled seem to be experiencing this occurrence at higher levels. Wether it’s stricter censorship or blocking from potential “views” and “likes” we’re seeing how content is being shifted and controlled. How does this impact movements like Black Lives Matter? And what does this mean for other racially charged content that falls under the “freedom of speech”? We explore these questions and these topics in the show:

Examples of shadow-banning Influencers and Tiktok fame Reporting inappropriate content Black Lives Matter The hypocrisy/double standers of what content is or isn’t banned How representation still matters on social media The dangers AND benefits of siloed social media content The added challenges (and sometimes danger) for marginalized content creaters

This episode's Happy Place - hint*, we’ll have you accessorizing in the rain!

We open up this week as we discuss the issue of grief and the challenges that come from trying to process “the natural reaction to loss”.We ask the questions like why do Americans struggle with identifying, expressing, and processing grief? Who is... LeVar Burton

Roots, Reading Rainbow, Star Trek TNG, LeVar Burton Reads, and, of course Jeopardy

In this episode we fangirl out over LeVar Burton.

Today we are doing something a bit unusual on the show but we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to show our admiration and appreciation to a champion in literacy. So, today we are talking all things LeVar Burton. From Trekkies to bookworms it’s hard to find a circle that Burton has not made an impact on (especial on us late Millennials). Burton is an author, a director, a podcaster, AND perhaps the new host Jeopardy??  Thanks to social media and a petition signed by thousands, LeVar Burton was able to live out his life-long dream of being the host of the famous game show perviously hosted by the late Alex Trebek. Even though the permanent hosting duties was originally “awarded” to Mike Richards (if interested in the details of that situation there’s a brief article on what happened linked down below) but has since been relieved as host and as an executive producer on the show. This leaves the podium up for “grabs” and these Unicorns are showing all the love and support for Burton. In this episode you’ll hear:

  • Our first remembrance of LeVar Burton
  • Reading Rainbow - The impact of the nurturing male figure
  • Star Trek - The importance of POC in sci-fi
  • Roots- It’s cultural significance and a brief dive into black exploitation in films
  • Jeopardy - Why is it so important to fans and POC to have LeVar Burton assuming the role of host
  • Mike Richards
  • We mentioned in the show that Burton wrote two books - Aftermath and The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm

If you’re an adult and miss having LeVar Burton read to you, go check out his podcast entitled - LeVar Burton Reads.

We land this episode in our happy place hint* - bacteria and Honey Bears make an enjoyable pair.

Critical Race Theory (and Education)

Let's Get Critical

In this episode we take a look at the hot topic Critical Race Theory and how it relates to schools.

This week our conversation focuses on the “hot topic” of critical race theory or CRT.  It’s back to school season and it’s not just face mask and vaccines parents are divided about this year.  Due to a recent surge of exposure in the media (particularly in the political realm) CRT has become less about what it ACTUALLY is and has taken on the form of a buzzword.  With some states looking to (or already have)  “ban” CRT from school curriculum we can’t help but wonder if people know exactly what they are “banning”. What is the the driving force behind the “War On Critical Race Theory”? In this episode you’ll hear us discuss:

  • The reactions of some parents towards CRT.
  • The misunderstandings and misconceptions about CRT.
  • Where did CRT come from?
  • Who is CRT for? What would that look like in the classroom?
  • What is the purpose of CRT?
  • What are some of the dangers if you don’t teach our children to think critically

We quickly end this episode in our Happy Place, hint** Somebody gets called out on their book cataloging and someone else just “skates” by.
